Age and the elements such as sun exposure can leave their mark on your skin, in the form of red and brown areas of discoloration. AFT (Advanced Fluorescence Technology) is the next generation of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light).  It is an effective, safe and non-invasive way to diminish these and other skin imperfections.

After a few treatments, you will see a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation, tiny blood vessels (capillaries), sun damage, age spots, flushing and blotchy looking skin.

AFT is successfully used for the treatment of these areas of red and brown discoloration because it can selectively damage or destroy the marks on your skin with no damage to the surrounding skin.

AFT Photo rejuvenation is used in both men and women and can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms.

What is AFT Skin Rejuvenation?

AFT is the next generation of intense pulsed light.  At Skinlogic, we have invested in the most advanced aesthetic medical equipment in order to offer you safe and proven techniques.

Our class 4 Laser/IPL system, the Harmony XL, utilises the next phase of IPL technology – Advance Fluorescence Technology (AFT™). AFT is a unique filtering system which enhances penetration without using excessive energy levels, thus protecting the epidermis, resulting in safer and more effective clinical outcomes with less discomfort for skin rejuvenation, thread veins and pigmented lesions.

AFT yields a more efficient system for ideal clinical improvements, less discomfort and minimal skin damage.

AFT Skin Rejuvenation is a popular, non-invasive treatment used to improve many skin conditions. It provides the ideal answer for patients with active lifestyles as the procedure requires no time away from your normal activities.

How does AFT photo rejuvenation work?

AFT is a gentle, non-invasive procedure that treats skin damage without disrupting the skin’s surface. AFT delivers powerful pulses of light that target problem areas and in addition stimulate new collagen growth, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin.

With each pulse of light energy, heat is emitted to the target area (e.g. red blood vessels, in the case of vascular lesions or brown melanin in the case of pigmented lesions). This heat damages the target (red or brown) cells whilst leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. These damaged cells then move towards the surface of the skin and slough off in the case of pigmented or brown blemishes. In the case of deeper vascular lesions they are gradually reabsorbed by the body.

What skin problems can be treated?

  • Prematurely aged or sun damaged skin – IPL will rejuvenate and resurface the skin which has been damaged as a result of the sun and other life-style factors thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and leaving your skin more radiant and younger looking.
  • Pigmentation – IPL will remove/reduce the appearance of age spots, freckles and superficial hyper-pigmentation resulting in a more even skin tone.
  • Vascular conditions – IPL will remove/reduce the appearance of redness associated with rosacea, thread veins/spider veins and Poikiloderma (redness, pigmentation and a spotty look to the neck and/or décolletage) resulting in a more even skin colour.

What areas can be treated?

AFT treatment can be used on most body areas e.g. face, neck, chest/décolleté, arms, hands and legs.

What is the treatment like?

A small hand piece with a cold chill tip is used to touch your skin.  You will notice bright flashes of light in the area to be treated and it feels almost like a rubber band that gently snaps against your skin. Depending on the size of the treatment area, each session can take from a few minutes to half an hour, or longer.

What happens after the treatment?

In most cases, AFT has very little or no down-time, which means you may be treated during your lunch break with almost no visible evidence of treatment. We may cover your skin with a tinted sunscreen, should you wish.  Immediately after the treatment you should experience a mild warmth/tingling sensation which usually subsides within an hour or two.  It feels like mild sunburn.  You may apply make-up after the treatment.

Are there any side-effects I should be aware of?

You may experience tightening of the skin afterwards for 1 or 2 days as well as minor redness and swelling. All of these are considered normal and will dissipate in the days following the laser treatment. Sometimes blistering may occur, although it is rare. To prevent scarring, it is important not to pick or pull at the skin as it heals. The use of ice packs or cooling methods are recommended to help alleviate any discomfort you may feel as your treated area heals.

How many treatments are required?

Depending on how you respond and the skin condition being treated, a course of approximately 3 to 6 treatments, about 4 weeks apart, is recommended.

What results can I expect?

We have proven with medical research that AFT and Laser treatments can significantly improve the appearance of a variety of skin conditions. Treatment success however varies from person to person and relies upon careful selection of the client and procedure, setting realistic expectations for your skin and your full compliance with pre-and post- treatment advice.

Laser Treatment results can last a long time if you take good care of your skin. Wearing sunscreen, hats, and using other protective measures like a good skin care line while minimizing sun exposure will help maintain your results. Annual maintenance treatments should help keep your skin looking fresh, radiant, and more youthful.

Who is not suitable for treatment?

  • Tanning – You should not expose your skin to direct UV light or apply self- tanning products prior to AFT treatment. If you do have a tan you should wait at least 2 weeks after your last UV exposure to ensure.  A commitment to stay out of the sun is necessary because treating tanned skin increases the possibility of side-effects, such as hyper pigmentation or temporary browning of the skin.
  • Pregnancy: Clients who are pregnant should not have AFT treatment because of the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy.
  • Medication: Clients who are using Roaccutane must have finished this medication 6 months prior to beginning AFT treatment. Photo sensitising medications should also be avoided prior to AFT treatment.
  • Other: Clients with severe dermatitis or eczema (within the treatment area), those with very dark skin types or those with a history of seizures due to light sensitivity are also not best suitable for AFT treatment.

Pre-treatment Care:

Actively tanned skin (direct sun or sun bed exposure within the last 2 weeks) will not be treated.

Make sure your skin's barrier is in optimal condition for your treatment by using a good skin care line and avoiding harsh products and/or treatments at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment.

If you have a darker skin tone and your practitioner advises you to, prepare the skin with prescribed topical hydroquinone and/or tretinoin products in order to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation, 4 weeks prior to treatment.

If possible, please come to your appointment without any jewellery, make-up, perfume or deodorant.

Post-treatment Care:

For the next few days, until your skin is back to normal, avoid the following:

  • Suntanning outside or inside
  • Hot baths or showers
  • Wet or dry sauna use
  • Swimming in chlorinated pools, hot tubs, and spas
  • Perfumed lotions or soaps on the treated skin
  • AHA, glycolic, salicylic, or depilatory creams on treated area

The application of cold compresses after the treatment is recommended.

Makeup can be applied immediately after treatment if required.

Your practitioner may prescribed a suitable after care product to use after your treatment.

A sun protection factor of 50 should be used on all exposed parts for at least four weeks after the treatment.

Pre-treatment Consultation

  • On arrival, you will be asked to complete a confidential patient intake form.
  • A VISIA Skin Analysis may be conducted.
  • Your practitioner will then discuss your concerns and requirements with you in order to get a clear understanding of your expectations.
  • After a thorough examination, the most suitable treatment options and their alternatives will be proposed to you.  Treatment procedures will be clearly outlined and discussed, together with the benefits and possible risks of each.
  • To ensure a good result, it is of utmost importance to carefully select our patients for this treatment.
  • Should we find that surgery will be better, we will then refer you to a plastic surgeon.
  • Your practitioner may also provide you with a quotation.
  • Any questions you have about the process or treatment will be answered honestly.
  • Together, you and the practitioner will then decide on the treatment that is most appropriate and safe for you.
  • Any pre- and post-treatment care will be explained in detail. Written instructions may be handed to you.

You are under no obligation to book the treatment with us after your consultation, however, should you do wish to book a treatment this can be done for you after your consultation or at a later date via phone or e-mail.

At Skinlogic we can assure you that we value your health and wellbeing. You will only be seen and treated by qualified and experienced professionals.

During the Treatment

Before your treatment you will be provided with a detailed consent form. You will be asked to read and sign this prior to your having your treatment.

You will have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions you may still have regarding the treatment.

Your practitioner will cleanse the area to be treated.  If necessary, topical anesthetic will be applied. At Skinlogic, we encourage our patients to omit the topical anestetic since it causes vasoconstriction and thus impair an optimal healing cascade.  However, your well-being and comfort is very important to us, so the option of topical anesthetic is always available. Depending on the treatment intensity, most patients report feeling just mild discomfort and heat, as though a hot rubber band is flicked against the skin. This part of the procedure is over quite quickly - within 20 minutes.

After the procedure, the skin is calmed with the application of specialized products to provide comfort, enhance your treatment and aid recovery.
